Obituary

Obituary for Mr. Randal Jackson Ellis

Randal J. Ellis, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 23, 2025, at the age of 69. He was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on September 17, 1955, to the late Dorothy Elizabeth Fuller Bazemore and Carl Jackson Ellis.

Randal spent his life rooted in the South, calling Columbia, SC; New Orleans, LA; and Pineville, MS home over the years. But no matter where he lived, Randal brought his humor, strength, and quiet dedication to everything he did.

For 27 years, he worked in Vehicle Management at the University of South Carolina, where he was a proud and loyal Gamecock. After retiring from the university in 2007, he enjoyed a second career with Interstate Transportation for another decade. When he finally retired for good in 2017, he made sure everyone knew it—and he embraced retirement with all the joy and peace he had earned.

Randal had a deep love of travel and was proud to have visited all 50 states. He had a passion for classic cars, a genuine curiosity about history, and an unwavering devotion to his family. A simple man in the very best sense, Randal built a beautiful life through hard work, honesty, and love.

Above all, Randal was a family man. He shared 52 wonderful years with his wife and best friend, Joanna Ellis. Together, they raised two children, Mandi Ellis Stern (JD Stern) and Travis Ellis (Jennifer Harbin), who carry forward his warmth, humor, and quiet strength. His grandson Zack was his best buddy in the whole wide world.

He is survived by his wife Joanna, his children and their spouses, and his grandson Zack. He is also survived by his brother, Gene Anderson of Massachusetts, and his sister, Betty Sheppard of Norfolk, Virginia.

Randal will be remembered for his big heart, his steady presence, his love of the open road, and the way he made every day better just by being there.

Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, is assisting the family.
